The Black Pepper has a long heritage as the most desirable spice coming to the new world. Used as a key ingredient, in Indian cooking since pre-2000BC, Black Pepper became a favourite with explorers seeking items to return back to their homelands. It soon became a valued commodity, being used as a currency and developing the dutch name of “peperduur”, due to it’s relatively expensive value.
Black Pepper still accounts for a fifth of all spices traded around the world and has historically been used to cure ailments from ear-ache, insect bites and joint pain to sun burn and insomnia.
